Use loaded labour cost — wage plus employer costs that belong in the labour calculation — rather than wage alone.

PRICING SUMMARY

What the job needs to recover.

Target selling price before tax——
Total job cost—
Gross profit—
Equivalent markup—
Effective selling rate / labour hour—
Tax—
Customer total—
Core formulaTarget price = total job cost ÷ (1 − target margin)

Example: a $700 cost at a 30% target gross margin requires a $1,000 selling price before tax. A 30% markup would produce a different result.

INTERPRET THE RESULT

Cost recovery comes before the margin target.

The workbook starts by adding labour, materials, travel, allocated overhead and other costs. That total is the amount the job must recover before it produces gross profit. It then calculates the selling price required for the target gross margin you entered.

The equivalent markup is shown separately because markup and margin use different denominators. This matters most when a team changes prices quickly or compares supplier markups with customer-facing gross margin.

CHECK BEFORE QUOTING

Use costs you can defend.

  • Use loaded labour cost rather than base wage where appropriate.
  • Allocate overhead consistently across comparable work.
  • Include realistic travel, disposal, equipment or subcontractor costs.
  • Confirm tax treatment for the customer and jurisdiction.
  • Document assumptions when the scope can change after inspection.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you commit.

What does the job pricing workbook calculate?

It combines loaded labour, material and parts cost, travel, allocated overhead and other job costs, then applies a target gross margin and optional tax rate.

Is markup the same as gross margin?

No. Markup is measured against cost, while gross margin is measured against selling price. The workbook displays both so the difference stays visible.

Does ZelvotriX save the numbers I enter?

No. The public workbook runs in your browser and does not submit the form values to ZelvotriX.
